In situations where it is necessary to concentrate and be quiet, earplugs can be an indispensable aid. But it is important to use them correctly for them to be effective.
In Ideas in 5 minutes we have decided to tell you how to avoid basic mistakes when using these plugs.
How to use foam earplugs
1. Wash your hands thoroughly and dry them with a towel before using the earplugs.
2. Squeeze the plugs between your fingers and roll them back and forth until they take the shape of a thin sausage.
❗ Squeeze the plugs only lengthwise, do not make them into a ball.
3. Stand in front of a mirror and gently pull the pinna up and back with one hand.
4. Insert the plug slowly and carefully into the ear canal, without pressing or pushing it too much.
5. Hold the outer end of the first earplug with your finger for a while so that it expands inward and fills the ear canal.
6. Repeat the process with the other ear.
7. Make sure you have inserted the plugs correctly. To do this, place your palms over your ears and listen. If this makes the sound duller, the earplugs are not working properly. You must repeat all the steps. If that doesn’t help, use other plugs.
❗ Keep in mind that well-fitting earplugs should not protrude too far from the ear and should be almost invisible when viewed from the front.
✅ If you find that the plugs are too big for your ears, you can trim their straight end with scissors or a sharp knife.
